Fillers
What are Fillers
- The term filler encompasses a wide range of products, and is an expression which describes treatment that restores volume and structure to the face
- Fillers are used to smooth wrinkles and plump up the skin by adding volume, and replacing lost collagen due to the natural ageing process. Fillers can also create subtle enhancements by filling hollows and deep lines for a more youthful appearance
- There are basically two types of Fillers: permanent and temporary. The temporary one is the safest, and only contains hyaluronic acid
- Hyaluronic acid is an essential skin component. It acts like a sponge that retains water and keeps the skin moisturized, plumped and healthy. In the fillers syringes, hyaluronic acid comes in the form of a gel. As we lose 50 % of our hyaluronic acid between the age of 40 and 50 years old, the skin becomes dry, thin and fragile. In order to help reduce the signs of ageing, hyaluronic acid gels can be injected within the skin, where it will act as a Filler or a “Beauty Booster”
Where can it be used?
- Rejuvenate thinning ageing lips which have lost volume and shape.
- Plump up younger lips, giving them a sexier and more defined outline and shape – without the dreaded “trout pout” look.
- Correct the downturn corner of the lips (marionette fold) which can give the face a sad and angry appearance.
- Smooth and revolumise the dreaded lines around the lips (so called smoker’s lines or bar code lines) which can cause lipstick to bleed.
- Erase cheek folds (nasolabial folds) which gives a sad and tired appearance.
- Frown lines and glabellar lines (angry wrinkles).
- Tear through (hollows under the lower eyelid).
- Nose and nasal bridge.
- Cheek augmentation.
- Chin augmentation.
What does the procedure involve?
BEFORE
Your pre-treatment consultation with the practitioner who will be carrying out the hyaluronic acid injection is very important. Take your time and discuss your needs and expectations, treatment options and related products, and also your medical history.
DURING
The treated area is slightly numbed by an ice pack. The practitioner uses a sterile filler syringe and a fine needle (or a cannula). The depth of the injection depends on the type of hyaluronic acid gel and the desired results. Superficial injections efficiently hydrate the skin and revive its glow. Deeper injections fill wrinkles and create volume. In order to optimize your comfort during the injection sessions, the Fillers are integrated anesthetic (lidocaine). The injection session lasts around 20 minutes.
AFTER
The hyaluronic acid diffuses through your skin. On the surface, it increases the skin’s hydration, softness and suppleness. On a deeper level, it fills the gaps between cells, smoothes the wrinkles and recreates lost volumes. Depending on your skin type, you may experience some temporary bruising and or swelling that are confined to the treated area. Several months after the injection, hyaluronic acid naturally degrades and resorbs like any natural skin component.
Is there any downtime?
Some minor initial discomfort is normal. Most patients are comfortable returning to work or other daily activities immediately. With any injectable treatment, there can be some slight bruising or swelling that accompanies it.
How long will it last?
The effect of the Filler is instant and the effect will last from 6-18 months. Some patients prefer to have a touch up after six months or later. In general, the effect of the Filler will last longer if you maintain the treatment on a regular basis. If you choose not to continue your treatment, the body will eventually absorb the filler and leave no trace.
Will My Family and Friends Notice I’ve Had Work Done?
0 times out of 10, family and friends do not notice you’ve had cosmetic treatment done, and that’s great! It is much better for people to recognize something has changed, commenting on how refreshed you look and how good your skin is looking, than for them to exact what kind of treatment you’ve had. Wouldn’t you agree? We realize this is a barrier for many when they are considering Dermal Fillers; you would like discrete results that will enhance your assets, not an entirely alien look. We agree with this whole-heartedly and always treat our patients with this in mind.
Do’s and Don’t’s
- Keep the area clean and cool for the first 24 hours
- Avoid strenuous exercise and direct sunlight for the first 24 hours
- It is recommended not to apply make-up for 24 hours after the injection
- If you have swelling at the injection site you can apply an ice pack for a brief period.
- Drink a lot of water
