Vampire Facelift – Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
The Vampire Facial can bring back this youthful color and volume. The basic PRP treatment has been used for almost 20 years to accelerate the healing of wounds and burnt skin, helps athletes – including, reportedly tennis ace Rafael Nadal – recover from injury. But it was when Dr Charles Runels from Alabama trademarked the name “Vampire Facelift” in 2010, during the craze for the Vampire Diaries and Twilight Saga, that the procedure became attractive for A-listers. The godmother of vampire facials is socialite Kim Kardashian, but even our own sweet-faced Anna Friel has reportedly succumbed to the trend.
What is Vampire Facelift?
Vampire Facelift or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a cutting-edge form of regenerative medicine. Platelets are the key to the body’s natural self-healing ability to stop bleeding and repair damaged blood vessels and cells. The growth factor substances of the plasma are responsible for activating and rejuvenating cells in skin tissues. The plasma helps rebuild and restore collagen, which rejuvenates and refreshes your skin below the surface. It is becoming widely used for cosmetic therapy and as an effective solution to accelerate the process of wound healing (sports injury, spinal & heart surgery, burns, osteoarthritis and aesthetic medical treatments) as well as a treatment for hair loss (male-type alopecia).
Are there any side effects?
The important part of PRP is the fact that it uses your own blood as part of the restorative technique in which the plasma of your own blood is concentrated and re-injected back into the tissues of your skin. The fact that PRP uses your own blood, there is no risk for rejection, infection, or an allergic reaction. While PRP facial rejuvenation is not technically a “facelift,” it can provide similar benefits to Dermal Fillers.
How does it work?
- Skin Rejuvenation by smoothing out wrinkles & folds, encouraging new collagen production and by improving skin color, elasticity & density. PRP is particularly effective for fine lines under the eyes that are difficult to treat by conventional rejuvenation therapy. It is also effective for treating acne scars, saggy skin, eye bags, and neck wrinkles
- Skin Regeneration by accelerating the process of wound healing after sports injuries, burns and aesthetic medicine treatments such as laser and IPL
- Hair Regeneration by nourishing the hair follicles and increasing blood supply which activates the dormant hair roots within months. PRP also stimulates the stem cells of the hair follicles thus helping in hair multiplication
How long does the procedure take, and how is it performed?
This cutting-edge rejuvenation is a quick 40-minute procedure. After the blood is drawn from the patient, it is spun down in a centrifuge. After centrifugation, the platelet and fibrin component of the blood (the top layer) is extracted and re-injected into the area of concern.
What does the procedure involve?
- The first step is to draw the patient’s own blood into a specially prepared test tube
- The tube is then placed in a centrifuge and spun at a certain speed to separate out the platelets
- The activated platelets then injected to the target area using very small needles similar to those used in Botox injections. It also can be placed on top of the skin and pushed into the dermis using patented microneedling techniques
- Results are expected within two to three months
How long before I notice the results? How long does it last?
You’ll notice a slight plumping or tightening or volumizing effect for a few days just like you would with other fillers. This is due to the PRFM being injected into the skin. The effect will dissipate and then your wrinkles will start to soften and disappear as collagen and tissue regenerate over the next 30 days. This improvement continues for approximately 12 weeks and then lasts at least 15 months.
For what types of patients is this procedure most suitable?
Any patient who wishes to reduce volume loss, fine lines, and textural changes of the skin is suitable for this procedure. It also appeals to the patient who is looking for a natural approach to volumizing the face and treating or reducing fine lines.
How long are the improvements maintained? If necessary, can the procedure be repeated, and if so, with what anticipated outcome?
PRP can be repeated, and better results are seen with a total of 2-3 treatments given 2-4 weeks apart. Patients can expect to see better results as they receive more treatments. With time, the results of PRP get better and better.
How does Vampire Facelift compare with injections of filler, Botox, or surgical facelifts?
This procedure can be combined with dermal fillers, Botox, IPL and Thread Lift. PRP builds tissue over time, whereas traditional filler breaks down over time.
